What it is
Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum is a living cultural village on the R37 (Chuenespoort Road), roughly 9–15 km from Polokwane's city centre. It's the only reconstructed Northern Sotho (Bakone) village of its kind in Limpopo, built on the original site of an ancient settlement to show how the Bakone people lived roughly 250 years ago.
What you'll see & do
Guided tours take visitors through traditional huts and communal areas while guides demonstrate fire-making, maize-grinding, pottery, and traditional beer-brewing. Craft displays and beadwork are on show throughout the village, and guides — often members of the Bakone community — answer questions on daily life, social structure, and survival skills of the period. A full guided visit takes around an hour, longer if your guide goes in-depth. It's well suited to families, school groups, and anyone wanting a genuine cultural (not just scenic) introduction to Limpopo.
